Named for Fleet Admiral Arleigh "31-Knot" Burke — WWII destroyer ace, Chief of Naval Operations 1955–1961, and architect of the modern surface Navy — USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) carried her namesake's fighting spirit into the Global War on Terror. During her 2005–06 deployment to the 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility, she sailed the Persian Gulf, North Arabian Sea, and Red Sea in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. She provided carrier strike group escort, maritime interdiction operations, and the Aegis ballistic missile defense umbrella that kept sailors and allies safe across the theater. The same decisive, aggressive seamanship that drove her namesake through the Solomon Islands at 31 knots drove the crew of DDG-51 through the demanding waters of the Arabian Peninsula.
