By 2018, USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) had spent nearly three decades at the forefront of American sea power. Commissioned on Independence Day 1991 and named for the Navy's most celebrated destroyer commander, DDG-51 deployed to the 6th Fleet's Mediterranean and European theaters as Coalition forces fought to eliminate the last strongholds of ISIS in Iraq and Syria under Operation Inherent Resolve. The U.S. Navy's surface fleet maintained persistent forward presence across the region — ready to strike, defend, and deter across every horizon. For the crew who served aboard the lead ship of the Navy's most capable destroyer class, it was both a duty and a privilege that bound them to a proud legacy stretching back to the waters of the South Pacific.
