Vice Admiral Aubrey Fitch was at the center of one of history's pivotal carrier battles. At Coral Sea in May 1942—the first carrier-versus-carrier engagement in history—he commanded the air component from USS Lexington (CV-2), and when the Lex went down, he made sure as many of her crew as possible survived. His namesake frigate, USS Aubrey Fitch (FFG-34), was commissioned June 9, 1984, a Perry-class guided missile frigate homeported at Mayport, Florida. Patrolling the Atlantic and Mediterranean through the Cold War's final decade, Aubrey Fitch kept her namesake's fighting spirit alive—always on watch, always ready.
