As the lead ship of her class, USS Austin (LPD-4) defined what an amphibious transport dock could do. Commissioned February 6, 1965, she spent more than four decades carrying Marines and their fighting gear to wherever the mission demanded—from Vietnam-era operations to Cold War deployments to the post-9/11 world. From the North Atlantic to the Persian Gulf, Austin was always at the tip of the amphibious spear, ready to put boots on the beach when it mattered most.
