In June 1918 at Belleau Wood, France, United States Marines and soldiers stopped the German advance toward Paris through three weeks of savage close-quarters fighting — earning the nickname "Teufelshunde," Devil Dogs, from their enemies and etching their valor permanently into the Corps' identity. In 1984, USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3) honored that legacy on a Western Pacific deployment, conducting amphibious operations and exercises with allied nations while projecting American strength across the vast Pacific theater.
