Named for the battle where United States Marines became legends, USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3) was commissioned September 23, 1978, as the third ship of the Tarawa class — one of the most capable amphibious assault platforms of her era. For nearly three decades she deployed across the Pacific, the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, and beyond, conducting amphibious operations and humanitarian missions while standing ready to land Marines wherever the mission called. When she was decommissioned in 2005, she left a legacy as enduring as the corps of Marines whose fighting spirit at Belleau Wood gave her name its meaning.
