Hospital Corpsman Third Class Edward C. Benfold gave his life on September 5, 1952, near Han'gye, Korea, throwing himself on two enemy grenades to save the Marines he served alongside — a selfless act of heroism that earned him the Medal of Honor posthumously. The ship that bears his name, USS Benfold (DDG-65), honored that sacrifice from her very first deployment in 1997–98, cutting through the Western Pacific as a newly commissioned Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer proving her worth in the 7th Fleet's waters. For the crew of that maiden cruise, it was the beginning of a proud service record — and a daily reminder that the name on their ship belonged to a man who gave everything for his shipmates.
