By 2004-05, the United States was deep into the Global War on Terror with ongoing combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) deployed to the Western Pacific as part of a carrier strike group, providing the Aegis air defense umbrella and Tomahawk strike capability that gave the battle group its full combat punch. Bunker Hill's crew stood watch in waters from the South China Sea to the Arabian Gulf, maintaining maritime superiority in a region transformed by more than three years of war.
