In 2014-15, USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) deployed during one of the most turbulent years of the post-9/11 era — the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which declared a caliphate in June 2014 and threatened to collapse the gains made over a decade of combat in Iraq. As part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S. Navy surged carrier strike groups into the Arabian Gulf and the Mediterranean, launching strikes against ISIL targets across Iraq and Syria. Bunker Hill's Aegis systems and Tomahawk capability made her an irreplaceable component of that effort. The crew who deployed in 2014-15 served at a moment when history was being made — and answered the call.
