Her 1987 cruise deployed the crew to the Persian Gulf during the Iran-Iraq War, the dangerous period known as the Tanker War. U.S. warships escorted reflagged Kuwaiti oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz while Iranian forces laid mines and attacked neutral shipping.
