USS Chicago (CG-11) carried a proud name first borne by a World War II heavy cruiser and into the guided missile age. Originally commissioned in 1945 as CA-136 and converted to Albany-class guided missile cruiser CG-11 in 1964, Chicago was a frontline combatant through the height of the Cold War. Her 1976 Western Pacific cruise came in America's Bicentennial year — in the shadow of the fall of Saigon, as the U.S. Navy reestablished its forward presence across a transformed Pacific. The crew who sailed with Chicago in that consequential year helped demonstrate that American naval power endured.
