USS Cowpens (CG-63) deployed to the Western Pacific in 2004–05, in the years following 9/11 when naval forward presence had taken on renewed urgency. Her Aegis combat system made her a cornerstone of the battle group's defensive umbrella, and her crew operated across a region that included the Taiwan Strait, the Korean Peninsula, and the broader Indo-Pacific.
