USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG-54) completed her maiden deployment in 1995–96, heading out for the first time as a commissioned warship less than two years after she was placed in service. An Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer commissioned in March 1994, she deployed into the Western Pacific as part of the forward-deployed naval forces, putting her systems and crew to the test on an extended ocean deployment. Named for Curtis D. Wilbur — Secretary of the Navy from 1924 to 1929 and former Chief Justice of California — she came home from that first cruise a proven ship.
