USS Dale (CG-19) deployed in 1982–83 as one of the Navy's Leahy-class guided missile cruisers — purpose-built fleet escorts designed to provide area air defense in the missile age. Named for Commodore Richard Dale, who served as first lieutenant aboard John Paul Jones's Bonhomme Richard during its legendary fight with HMS Serapis, she carried a warrior's heritage into a Cold War deployment that demanded steady vigilance.
