USS Dale (CG-19) returned to sea in 1984 as part of the Reagan-era naval buildup that put more ships, more often, into more of the world's strategic waters. A Leahy-class guided missile cruiser with more than twenty years of fleet service, she was a known quantity — a ship that could be counted on for the sustained operations that forward presence required. Named for Commodore Richard Dale, a founding-generation American naval officer who fought in both the Revolution and the Quasi-War with France, she continued the tradition of steady sea service that had always defined her.
