USS Dale (CG-19) deployed in 1991 — the year Operation Desert Storm ended in the Persian Gulf and the Soviet Union began its final dissolution, two events that transformed the strategic environment the Navy had been built to contest. A Leahy-class guided missile cruiser commissioned in 1963 and nearing the end of her service life, she continued her forward presence mission with the quiet professionalism of a ship that had been doing the Navy's work for nearly thirty years. Named for Commodore Richard Dale, one of the founding generation of American sea officers, she closed out her career during the year the Cold War ended.
