USS Decatur (DDG-73) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer commissioned in 1998, named for one of the most celebrated officers in the early American Navy. Commodore Stephen Decatur Jr. made his name in 1804 when he led a daring raid into Tripoli Harbor and set fire to the captured USS Philadelphia rather than let her serve as a warship against the United States — an act Lord Nelson called the most bold and daring of the age. Decatur went on to defeat HMS Macedonian in single-ship combat during the War of 1812. The destroyer bearing his name carried that tradition of bold, skilled seamanship into the modern era of the Pacific Fleet.
