USS Detroit (AOE-4) was a Sacramento-class fast combat support ship commissioned in 1968 — one of the Navy's most capable underway replenishment vessels, designed to keep the fleet at sea for as long as operations demanded. Her 1971 deployment took her into the heart of the fleet replenishment mission: delivering fuel, ammunition, and provisions to combatants operating far from port. Named for Detroit, Michigan, she was a working ship, and the men who served that cruise kept the fleet moving during a demanding period of American naval operations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
