USS Detroit (AOE-4) was underway in 1986 during one of the more assertive years of the Reagan-era Navy. The Atlantic and Mediterranean were active theaters for U.S. naval forces, and fast combat support ships like Detroit were essential to sustaining that presence — delivering fuel, ammunition, and provisions so the combatants could stay at sea and on station. Named for Detroit, Michigan, and commissioned in 1968, she had nearly two decades of fleet service behind her when the crew of the 1986 cruise took her to sea.
