USS Donald Cook (DDG-75) completed her maiden deployment in 2000, just two years after commissioning — her first extended cruise as a warship, when the crew proved themselves at sea far from home. Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are built for the full spectrum of naval warfare, and a maiden deployment is where that readiness is first put to the test. Named for Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant Donald G. Cook, USMC — who gave up his own chance for early release from a North Vietnamese prison camp to stay with his men — Donald Cook sailed that first deployment carrying a name that set the standard every crew since has worked to honor.
