In 1984, the Cold War's front lines stretched from the North Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, and USS Enterprise patrolled them all. Three years into the Reagan buildup, American carrier battle groups were more capable and more numerous than at any point since World War II. CVN-65's 1984 cruise took her through the Western Pacific and into the Indian Ocean at a time when tensions in the Middle East were rising — the Iran-Iraq War was bleeding across the Persian Gulf, and the Navy kept a watchful eye on the Strait of Hormuz. Carrier Air Wing Eleven maintained round-the-clock readiness, prepared to respond to any threat that dared challenge American resolve.
