USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-42) was one of the storied Midway-class carriers that shaped American naval power through three decades of Cold War service. Commissioned in April 1945 and named for the thirty-second President, she served as an attack carrier (CVA) through the 1960s before redesignation as CV-42 in 1969. Through the 1970s she continued her Mediterranean deployments with the steady professionalism of a seasoned fleet carrier. The 1976–77 MED CRUISE was her final operational deployment — a last watch in the Mediterranean before decommissioning in September 1977, closing a career that stretched from the final days of World War II to the heart of the Cold War.
