USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) was one of the storied Midway-class carriers that shaped American naval power through three decades of Cold War service. Commissioned in April 1945 and named for the thirty-second President who guided the nation through the Depression and World War II, she served as an attack carrier in the Mediterranean — a steady, powerful presence during the most consequential years of the Cold War. The 1961 MED CRUISE came in a year of successive crises — the Bay of Pigs in April, the Berlin Crisis through the summer, the Wall going up in August. Roosevelt's presence in the Mediterranean was a statement of resolve during one of the Cold War's most dangerous years.
