USS Howard (DDG-83) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer commissioned on November 20, 2003. Named for Gunnery Sergeant Jimmie E. Howard, USMC, Medal of Honor recipient, who led his outnumbered reconnaissance platoon in a heroic all-night battle against a vastly superior North Vietnamese force in Quang Tin Province in June 1966 — refusing evacuation despite severe wounds until every man was safely recovered. Homeported in Pearl Harbor, USS Howard has served the Pacific Fleet through multiple deployments to the Western Pacific and Middle East.
