In 1961-62, USS Intrepid (CVS-11) deployed to the Western Pacific following her redesignation as an antisubmarine warfare carrier. Operating with her dedicated ASW air wing, Intrepid hunted Soviet submarines in the Pacific while contributing to NATO's collective defense posture. The "Fighting I" proved as effective in her new ASW role as she had been throughout her storied combat career.
