USS Mason (DDG-87) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer commissioned on 12 April 2003 at Bath, Maine. Named in honor of Ensign Newton Henry Mason, a Medal of Honor recipient from the Civil War, and in tribute to the crew of the WWII destroyer escort USS Mason (DE-529) — one of the first U.S. Navy ships crewed largely by African American enlisted men, who proved their valor in the North Atlantic convoys of 1944.
