USS Nimitz (CVN-68) has been logging dues in those waters since 1979, when she deployed to the Gulf during the Iranian hostage crisis and launched the ill-fated Operation Eagle Claw rescue attempt. From that first deployment through Desert Storm, the 1990s no-fly zones over Iraq, and multiple rotations supporting Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, Nimitz sailors have done more than their share of Gulf time.
