USS Ohio (SSGN-726) was originally commissioned on November 11, 1981, as the lead ballistic missile submarine of her class. After the Cold War, she was converted to a guided-missile submarine (SSGN), re-emerging in 2002 with the ability to carry up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles and support special operations forces — transforming her from a nuclear deterrence platform into one of the Navy's most capable conventional strike assets.
