USS Oriskany (CVA-34) returned to the Western Pacific in 1971 as the United States continued to reduce its ground presence in South Vietnam while the air war carried on. Nixon's Vietnamization policy was in full implementation, and American forces were steadily being withdrawn, yet Oriskany's air wing remained a critical element of the campaign, flying in support of South Vietnamese forces and interdicting supply lines along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The 1971 deployment coincided with major South Vietnamese ground operations in Laos, and carrier aviation provided essential fire support and cover during this critical period.
