USS Oriskany (CVA-34) was in the Western Pacific for the 1972-73 deployment during one of the most decisive periods of the air war. In the spring of 1972, North Vietnam launched the Easter Offensive, a massive conventional invasion that prompted President Nixon to order the mining of Haiphong Harbor and the resumption of heavy bombing under Operation Linebacker. Oriskany's air wing flew in these critical operations, pressing attacks on North Vietnamese targets at a tempo not seen since 1968. The December 1972 Linebacker II raids on Hanoi preceded the signing of the Paris Peace Accords in January 1973, which formally ended American combat involvement in Vietnam. Oriskany's 1972-73 crew served through the final and most decisive chapters of the air war over North Vietnam. This sweatshirt honors every member of that historic deployment.
