USS Oriskany (CVA-34) deployed to the Western Pacific in 1973-74 in the aftermath of the Paris Peace Accords, which had formally ended direct American combat involvement in Vietnam in January 1973. The ceasefire was fragile and frequently violated by North Vietnam, and the United States maintained a strong naval presence in the region to deter further aggression and support the ongoing transition to South Vietnamese self-defense. Oriskany remained a symbol of American commitment in the Pacific even as the political situation in Southeast Asia grew increasingly unstable. The ship and her crew stood watch over a region where peace was uncertain, fulfilling the forward presence mission that had defined carrier operations in the Western Pacific for decades. This sweatshirt honors all who served aboard Oriskany during the 1973-74 WESTPAC deployment.
