USS Oscar Austin (DDG-79) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer commissioned on August 19, 2000, and named in honor of Corporal Oscar P. Austin, USMC, a Medal of Honor recipient who gave his life to save a fellow Marine during the Vietnam War. When an enemy grenade landed near a wounded comrade, Corporal Austin threw himself on the grenade to absorb the blast, sacrificing himself on February 23, 1969. Homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, Oscar Austin is equipped with the Aegis Combat System and serves as a versatile multi-mission warship capable of anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She has deployed across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Middle East in defense of American interests. This sweatshirt features the official ship's crest and is a tribute to the crew who serve with honor under the name of a true American hero.
