USS Ponce (LPD-15) was the twelfth and final ship of the Austin class of amphibious transport docks, commissioned July 10, 1971 and named for the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. After more than three decades as a conventional amphib she was converted in 2012 to an Afloat Forward Staging Base — the first ship of her kind, designed to support special operations, mine countermeasures, and counter-piracy operations forward-deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. She also became the first U.S. Navy warship to deploy with a directed-energy weapon, the Laser Weapon System (LaWS), in 2014. Homeported first at Norfolk and later forward-deployed to Bahrain, she served until 2017. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of the longest-serving Austin-class LPD.
