USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58) is an Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigate commissioned on April 12, 1986, and homeported at Naval Station Mayport, Florida. Named for Boatswain's Mate Second Class Samuel Booker Roberts Jr., a Medal of Honor recipient killed in action at Tulagi in 1942, the ship carries forward his legacy of selfless valor. FFG-58 is perhaps best remembered for striking a contact mine in the Persian Gulf on April 14, 1988, during Operation Earnest Will — an explosion that tore a 25-foot hole in her hull. Her crew's extraordinary damage control saved the ship, earning Samuel B. Roberts the nickname The Ship That Would Not Die. This Ship's Crest sweatshirt honors FFG-58 and all who have served aboard her.
