USS San Francisco (SSN-711) is a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered attack submarine commissioned on April 24, 1981, and homeported at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Named for the city of San Francisco, California, SSN-711 conducted Cold War anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and strike operations throughout the Pacific. On December 9, 2005, San Francisco struck an uncharted undersea mountain at full speed while running submerged at 525 feet, killing one crew member and injuring 98. The crew's extraordinary damage control and seamanship kept the submarine afloat and allowed her to surface and proceed under her own power to Apra Harbor, Guam — one of the most remarkable feats of underwater damage control in modern naval history. This Ship's Crest sweatshirt honors SSN-711 and all who served in her crew.
