The USS Saratoga (CV-60) was a Forrestal-class aircraft carrier commissioned on April 14, 1956, and homeported at Naval Station Mayport, Florida. Named for the Battles of Saratoga in 1777, the pivotal engagements that secured French alliance and helped win American independence. The 1984 Mediterranean deployment placed Saratoga in the center of heightened tensions involving Libya and ongoing instability across the Middle East, with the Sixth Fleet maintaining constant readiness and deterrent posture.
