The USS Saratoga (CVA-60) was a Forrestal-class attack carrier commissioned on April 14, 1956, and homeported at Naval Station Mayport, Florida. Named for the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. The 1964-65 Mediterranean deployment unfolded as the Vietnam War was rapidly escalating following the Gulf of Tonkin incident in August 1964, and the Cold War competition for influence in the Mediterranean remained intense. The Sixth Fleet and Saratoga's presence served as a visible reminder of American commitment to allied security in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters. This sweatshirt honors the crew who served aboard USS Saratoga during the 1964-65 cruise.
