The USS Saratoga (CVA-60) was a Forrestal-class attack carrier commissioned on April 14, 1956, and homeported at Naval Station Mayport, Florida. Named for the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. The 1970 Mediterranean deployment came as the Vietnam War entered its most politically turbulent phase, with American public opinion sharply divided and the Nixon administration pursuing Vietnamization. The Sixth Fleet maintained its critical deterrent posture in the Mediterranean throughout, with Saratoga and her air wing providing the combat-ready presence that allies and adversaries alike watched closely. This sweatshirt honors the crew who served aboard USS Saratoga during the 1970 cruise.
