The USS Saratoga (CVA-60) was a Forrestal-class attack carrier commissioned on April 14, 1956, and homeported at Naval Station Mayport, Florida. Named for the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. The 1971 Mediterranean deployment continued Saratoga's long tradition of Sixth Fleet service as the Cold War in the Mediterranean remained as intense as ever, with Soviet naval forces increasingly challenging American dominance of the region. Saratoga and her air wing provided the forward presence that underpinned NATO's southern flank throughout this critical period. This sweatshirt honors the crew who served aboard USS Saratoga during the 1971 cruise.
