USS Wasp (LHD-1) is the lead ship of her class of amphibious assault ships, commissioned July 29, 1989 at Pascagoula, Mississippi. Her name honors a long line of U.S. Navy Wasps stretching back to the Revolutionary War, including the World War II carriers Wasp (CV-7) and Wasp (CV-18). Designed to land Marines from the sea by helicopter, AV-8B Harrier, and LCAC air-cushion landing craft, she has served across more than thirty years of fleet operations including Mediterranean deployments, Operation Iraqi Freedom support, and the 2011 sea trials of the F-35B Lightning II — the first F-35 carrier landing in U.S. Navy history. From 2018 to 2024 she was forward-deployed to Sasebo, Japan as the U.S. 7th Fleet's expeditionary strike group flagship before returning to Norfolk. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of the lead ship of the Wasp class.
