Admiral David Glasgow Farragut — the first officer ever promoted to the rank of full admiral in the United States Navy — stood in the rigging at Mobile Bay in 1864, lashed himself in place, and drove his fleet through Confederate mines because the alternative was unacceptable. USS Farragut (DDG-99) was built in that spirit: an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer built for sustained high-intensity combat, named for a man whose name became synonymous with decisive action. The Farragut crest honors both the original fighting admiral and every crew member who has served aboard DDG-99.
