USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) is the seventh ship of the Nimitz class, commissioned December 9, 1995 at Newport News, Virginia and named for Senator John Cornelius Stennis of Mississippi — a long-serving chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee whose decades of Navy advocacy earned him the title "the Father of America's Modern Navy." Stennis has served across more than a quarter-century of fleet operations including Operation Southern Watch over Iraq, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and multiple Western Pacific patrols. Originally homeported at Norfolk, she has since sailed from Bremerton, Washington and San Diego. As of 2026 she is in the final phase of a refueling and complex overhaul at Newport News that will return her to fleet service for another quarter-century. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of one of the Navy's most-deployed carriers of the post-Cold War era.
