USS Ticonderoga (CG-47) was the lead ship of her class of guided-missile cruisers — the U.S. Navy's first warships built around the Aegis Combat System, the integrated radar and missile-control system that revolutionized fleet air defense. Commissioned January 22, 1983 at Pascagoula, Mississippi and named for the 1775 American victory at Fort Ticonderoga in the Revolutionary War, she launched a class of twenty-seven cruisers that became the backbone of carrier strike group air defense for forty years. Ticonderoga's career spanned the late Cold War, multiple Mediterranean and Caribbean deployments, and operations during the 1989 invasion of Panama. She was decommissioned September 30, 2004 — the first Aegis cruiser to leave service.
