USS Ranger (CV-61) was the third ship of the Forrestal class — among the first U.S. carriers designed from the keel up to operate jet aircraft. Commissioned August 10, 1957 at Newport News, she joined the Pacific Fleet and spent her entire thirty-six-year career on the West Coast, homeported at NAS Alameda and later NAS North Island. She made seven Vietnam combat deployments — more than any other carrier — and was the first carrier to operate the RA-5C Vigilante and the F-14 Tomcat in fleet service. Her final operational deployment, the 1990-91 Persian Gulf cruise, took her into Operation Desert Storm. Decommissioned July 10, 1993, Ranger was best known for her relentless WestPac tempo and her place in the Tomcat era of naval aviation. This framed ship photo is a tribute to her crew and the legacy of the Pacific Fleet's hardest-deployed Forrestal-class carrier.
