USS Anzio (CG-68) deployed in 1994–95 into one of the most complex security environments of the post-Cold War era. In the Adriatic and Mediterranean, NATO was struggling to end the Bosnian War — a conflict that had already cost over 100,000 lives. Commissioned just two years earlier on May 22, 1992, and named for the bold WWII amphibious assault that broke the Italian front, Anzio brought her Aegis Combat System to bear as NATO enforced the No-Fly Zone over Bosnia under Operation Deny Flight. In 1995, Operation Deliberate Force — the decisive NATO air campaign — finally ended the siege. When the Dayton Accords were signed that November, USS Anzio had played her part in closing Europe's darkest chapter since World War II.
