By 2006, Iraq stood at a crossroads. Sectarian violence had reached a fever pitch, and the coalition faced its gravest test since the invasion. President Bush's announcement of the Surge in January 2007 — an infusion of 30,000 additional troops under General David Petraeus — represented a recommitment to victory when retreat seemed tempting. USS Anzio (CG-68) deployed during this pivotal period, operating in the 5th Fleet's area of responsibility and providing the Aegis air defense umbrella over a region in transition. The ship named for a hard-won Italian beachhead was again asked to hold the line.
