Vice Admiral Aubrey Fitch was at the center of one of history's pivotal carrier battles. At Coral Sea in May 1942—the first carrier-versus-carrier engagement in history—he commanded the air component from USS Lexington (CV-2), and when the Lex went down, he made sure as many of her crew as possible survived. His namesake frigate, USS Aubrey Fitch (FFG-34), was commissioned June 9, 1984, a Perry-class guided missile frigate homeported at Mayport, Florida.
