USS Aubrey Fitch

Commissioned in 1982, the Aubrey Fitch honors Admiral Aubrey W. Fitch, a carrier aviation pioneer who commanded Carrier Division One at the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942—the first naval battle in history fought entirely by aircraft, with the opposing fleets never in visual contact. Fitch's carriers helped turn back the Japanese advance toward Australia. The Aubrey Fitch was decommissioned in 1997 after 15 years of Atlantic Fleet service.
