USS Benfold crest
Commissioned in 1996, the Benfold honors Hospital Corpsman Third Class Edward C. Benfold, who was killed in Korea in 1952 after pulling two wounded Marines to safety under fire and then throwing back an enemy grenade that detonated in his hands—earning the Medal of Honor posthumously. Permanently homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, the Benfold has been a mainstay of the Pacific Fleet for three decades.
