USS Birmingham

Commissioned in 1978, the Birmingham is a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine named for Alabama's steel city—an industrial powerhouse built on iron and coal with deep naval ties. Like all boats of her class, she prowled the deep Atlantic hunting Soviet submarines during the Cold War, operating where surface sailors rarely go and public attention never reaches. She was decommissioned in 1997 after 19 years of silent service.
